Servo Power Units (SPU) combine hydraulic power with the controllability of electric servo systems to deliver efficient and precise motion control. Unlike traditional hydraulic power units that run continuously, servo power units utilize power-on-demand operation that reduces energy consumption and improves overall system efficiency.

The Kyntronics SPU Compact Servo Power Unit Total Solution integrates the servo motor, pump, and controls into a single compact package. The SPU Total Solution connects to a hydraulic cylinder and/or rotary motors via short hoses with robust fittings while providing component integration and programming for a complete package. The compact size allows for greater design flexibility and integration into tight spaces, making it an ideal solution for new or retrofit applications.

Modernize the Way You Use Hydraulics

The SPU provides a compact approach to hydraulic power that can be configured around the needs of the application. By combining electric control with hydraulic power, the SPU can simplify hydraulic system architecture while providing the flexibility to support linear motion, rotary motion, valve actuation and multiple hydraulic functions.

Why Choose the SPU?

Distribute Hydraulic Power: Reduce the need for centralized hydraulic infrastructure, long hose runs, large reservoirs and associated components by locating hydraulic power closer to where it is needed.

Reduce Maintenance & Leak Points: A more compact, hybrid design reduces hoses, fittings and fluid volume, helping minimize potential leak points, maintenance requirements and hydraulic fluid management.

Improve Energy Efficiency: Rather than continuously circulating hydraulic fluid, the SPU uses power only when the application requires it, helping reduce unnecessary energy consumption and heat generation.

Modernize Without Starting Over: Upgrade the hydraulic power unit and control system while retaining existing cylinders, rotary actuators, valves and mechanical components where appropriate—reducing the need for extensive machine redesign.

Adapt to the Application: Configure the SPU around the required motion, flow, power and number of hydraulic devices rather than forcing the application around a fixed hydraulic architecture.

Configured To Your Application

Compact Hybrid Power Units are available in three basic configurations to fit a variety of application requirements.

Standard SPU Configuration

  • Operates a single cylinder or a rotary motor
  • Reservoir for rod compensation

SPU Multi-Port Configuration

  • Connect with multiple cylinders or rotary actuators (up to 16) with independent control using solenoid operated ports (“Octet” Image Shown)
    • Clamping cylinders
    • Lifts
    • Valve operation
      • Open / Close
      • Position Control

SPU Multi-Power Unit Configuration

  • Produces higher speed and flow
  • Can switch from multiple Power Units for high speed, then to a single unit for slow speed accurate force control
  • Allows two or more Power Units operating in parallel
Where are Compact Power Units (SPUs) typically used?

SPUs are used in new and retrofit applications where a compact, servo-controlled alternative to traditional HPUs are needed. They connect via short hoses to a linear cylinder or rotary actuator. Common uses include presses, mobile equipment, valve actuation, and washdown environments.

What benefits does a Compact Servo Power Unit (SPU) provide compared to a traditional hydraulic power unit (HPU)?

SPUs provide energy-efficient, power-on-demand operation, a sealed, low-maintenance design, and a compact footprint. Built-in servo control allows for precision position and force control, eliminating the need for external controls, making them a cost-effective alternative to traditional HPUs.

I want to upgrade from a traditional hydraulic power unit, but I want to use the existing cylinders that are connected to it. What are my options?

SPUs are designed for retrofit applications, connecting directly to existing cylinders or rotary actuators via short hoses. This allows you to upgrade to servo control while reducing energy use, leaks, and maintenance.

Can I use my existing cylinder with a Compact Power Unit (SPU)?

SPUs are designed to connect directly to existing cylinders or rotary actuators using short hoses or piping. The unit includes the pump, motor, drive, and controls in a compact, integrated package.

When should I choose a Compact Power Unit (SPU) instead of a Hybrid Linear Actuator (SHA)?

An SPU may be a better choice when the application uses existing or customer-preferred hydraulic cylinders, requires rotary motion or multiple hydraulic functions, benefits from locating the hydraulic power source separately from the actuator, or when retaining the existing mechanical design can help avoid costly or unnecessary machine redesign.

Can Compact Power Units (SPU) control both position and force?

SPUs provide closed-loop position and force control using external sensors and optional pressure transducers. They can control position, control force, or seamlessly switch between the two, most commonly using position control with force limit.

Does a Compact Power Unit (SPU) require proportional or hydraulic servo valves?

No. In those cases where precision motion control is required, instead of using a proportional or hydraulic servo valve to meter flow from a continuously operating hydraulic supply, the SPU uses servo motor speed and torque control to control pump output. This approach provides precise actuator position, speed, and force control with a simplified architecture.

Is a Compact Power Unit (SPU) only needed when precise servo control is required?

No. Precise servo control is one advantage, but an SPU can also be used to reduce energy consumption, hydraulic infrastructure, fluid volume, maintenance, or machine footprint. Servo control is an optional feature of the SPU, and is how the SPU delivers greater control flexibility, not the only reason to use one.
